A few things around Orange County that were worth watching over the weekend:
- J.B. Green caught a touchdown pass with 5:09 remaining to give Newport Harbor a 7-3 Pac-5 victory over Sherman Oaks Notre Dame. There’s more where that came from, but there may need to be a lot more against visiting Long Beach Poly in the semifinal Friday night.
- Poly’s defense forced six turnovers in its 39-7 Pac-5 victory over Santa Margarita. It looks like the Jackrabbits put together the kind of wire-to-wire performance the had been looking for.
- Edison held Compton to four first downs in its 28-10 Pac-5 victory. I tell you, Edison is a legitimate threat to win the division title.
- Matt Barkley passed for 259 yards and a touchdown for Mater Dei in its 31-17 Pac-5 victory over Tesoro. By season’s end, Tesoro was a credible Pac-5 team and a deserving South Coast League champion.
- Raymond Huizar threw four touchdown passes for Pacifica in its 34-0 Southern Division victory over Costa Mesa. The losing Mustangs went into the game averaging 6.9 points a game.
- Robert Hair filled in for injured Timothy Smith and rushed 16 times for 128 yards as undefeated University won its Southern Division playoff, 24-7, over Santa Ana Valley. That’s the way to fill a guy’s shoes.
- Michael Camacho scored on back-to-back runs of 51 and 63 yards for Foothill in its 52-14 Southwest Division victory over Bonita. But the real unusual thing was Richard Song returning an interception and Darren Fitch returning a fumble recovery for touchdowns.
- Michael Allain rushed for 320 yards and six touchdowns for Fullerton in its 41-20 Southeast Division victory over Arroyo. Nice time to have a career-best performance.
- Aaron Garbutt scored on a 54-yard swing pass with 1:10 left, and then Westminster won in overtime, 21-14, in a Southeast Division victory over El Rancho. Yep, the 54-yard swing pass -- just like it was drawn up. Had to like Juan Ortiz’s passing numbers: six of 10 for 180 yards.
- Ronnie Hillman of La Habra scored three touchdowns in its 55-7 Southeast Division victory over Ocean View. Hillman scored three of the four times he touched the ball. You know what they say, three out of four’s not bad.
- Hunter Steffien of St. Margaret’s rushed for 200 yards and six touchdowns in a 58-0 Northeast Division victory over Twin Pines. Steffien rushed for 178 yards in the first quarter. The first quarter.
