Things didn’t look promising for Oak Park basketball fans at the beginning of the season, not after losing standout Kareem Maddox to graduation and long-time coach Ed Chevalier to retirement. Any program would have a tough time bouncing back from something like that.

Despite the prevailing pessimism, Bobby Hillard has kept the Eagles afloat thus far. Excuse me, what I meant to say is, Hillard has kept the Eagles flying high. He’s averaging 22.8 points and 12 rebounds a game heading into Friday’s nonleague game against Canyon.

Hart had no answer for Hillard in early December, when he scored 37 points and added 18 rebounds. Four days later, the senior forward had another double-double, this time 14 points and 13 rebounds against Saugus. If Oak Park hopes to win its seventh consecutive Tri-Valley League title, Hillard must continue to deliver.
