Thacher has certainly had a flair for the dramatic this season.
Just as they had in the semifinals against Segerstrom, the Toads won the sets they needed to win on Wednesday, taking the Southern Section-Toyota Division V title with a 10-8 victory over La Salle in the last match of the day at the Claremont Club.
Stephen Yih and Andrew Pollett clinched Thacher’s first championship with a anti-climactic 6-0 victory over La Salle’s No. 3 doubles duo of Tony Exposito and Marco Suarez. Yih and Pollett notched a key point earlier when they rallied from a 5-2 deficit to beat T.J. Justo and and Spencer Scott.
McCoy Becker swept, 6-4, 7-6 (6), 6-2 at No. 1 singles for Thacher (16-3), which lost to Cate in last year’s final.
‘Our coaches kept telling us every game counts, don’t let one up,’ Pollett said. ‘Stephen and I have played together all year so this is a good way to cap it off.’
