Football: La Sierra breaks national rushing record

Go ahead, accuse the Riverside La Sierra Eagles of always being in a rush.

The Eagles set a national record Oct. 2 by running the football 87 times during a 30-6 victory over Riverside Ramona. Then, last Friday, they topped their own mark by rushing 90 times during a 36-27 victory over Moreno Valley Canyon Springs.

‘It’s a great accomplishment whenever you can set a national record,’ said La Sierra Coach Craig Cieslik, whose team broke a record of 85 rushing attempts that had been set in 1979 by Stronghurst Southern (Ill.). The Eagles operate out of a no-huddle, wing-fly formation.

Could La Sierra (5-0) top 100 rushes when it plays at Moreno Valley Vista del Lago (2-3) on Friday? Stay tuned.
