The high school football season in Southern California officially gets started in less than 30 minutes, with a terrific opener matching Anaheim Servite and Long Beach Poly at Veterans Stadium. Poly is ranked No. 1 in the Pac-5 Division rankings and Servite No. 2. The weather is perfect, the fans are fired up and the coaches can’t wait to see how their players are going to perform.

All I can say to Servite fans is that when Troy Thomas serves as a defensive coordinator, good things usually happen. He was defensive coordinator at Westlake in 1999, and the Warriors won a Southern Section title. He was defensive coordinator at Encino Crespi in 2004, and the Celts won a Southern Section title. He was defensive coordinator at Servite in 2005, and the Friars beat Poly.
