Fluor Constructors Inc. Power Division in Atlanta, Ga., a unit of Irvine-based Fluor Corp., has been awarded a contract by the Tennessee Valley Authority to build a new 160-megawatt coal-fired power plant near Paducah, Ky. The $220-million coal-burning plant will be built at TVA’s Shawnee Steam Plant as a joint project by the TVA, Duke Power Co., the Electric Power Research Institute, the Commonwealth of Kentucky and Combustion Engineering Inc.
The plant will demonstrate a relatively new technology called fluidized bed combustion, which burns coal economically and produces fewer air pollutants.
The value of Fluor contract is estimated to be $50 million, according to a company spokesman.
