Man Held in Shooting Death of Child

A 22-year-old man was arrested for investigation of murder in the shooting death of a 4-year-old boy outside his South-Central Los Angeles home. James Barnett, 22, of Los Angeles surrendered to Newton Division police after being told that he was being sought in the death of Demont Beans, who was killed outside his home at 1537 E. 53rd St., Detective Morton Duff said. Barnett reportedly had been visiting friends who are neighbors of the Beans family when he allegedly fired the gunshot that hit the child in the head, Duff said. Police believe that the bullet that killed the youngster was probably meant for someone else, but said they do not know who.
