A Santa Monica police officer who followed a car onto a freeway was shot at Monday. A bullet pierced the patrol car’s windshield but did not injure the officer, police said.
Officer Anita McKeown, 23, had followed a car from Cloverfield Boulevard onto the eastbound Santa Monica Freeway.
“She was not stopping the car; she was deciding whether to,” Sgt. Mike Cortrite said. Then a passenger leaned out of a window and fired three shots at the patrol car. One of the shots shattered the windshield.
McKeown regained control of her car and pursued the speeding car into South Los Angeles near Crenshaw Boulevard where she lost sight of it.
