Nygord Collects Two More Titles in Pistol Shooting

Don Nygord of La Crescenta won two more pistol championships at the National Rifle Assn.’s U.S.-International tournament at Chino recently, finishing with three titles and a third place.

Nygord, who earlier had won the standard pistol competition, added center-fire and air-pistol championships last weekend. He finished third in free-pistol shooting.

The tournament attracted about 650 shooters, including 167 pistol competitors, to the Olympic shooting venue, Prado Tiro. Nygord, 45, a gunsmith, was on the 1984 U.S. Olympic team and placed 14th in the free-pistol competition.

With three titles at the recent tournament, he became a member of the U.S. shooting team and will compete later this year in the Soviet Union.

In center-fire pistol, he shot a 1,760 score out of a possible 1,800. His air-pistol score was 1,743 x 1,800, and his free-pistol score was 1,716.

An apparent communication mixup caused the loss of thousands of game fish at the San Gabriel reservoir in the San Gabriel Mountains in April.

The Los Angeles County Dept. of Public Works notified the State Dept. of Fish and Game that there would be a drawdown of water at the reservoir for dam maintenance, but word apparently didn’t reach the DFG’s hatchery people, who stocked about 8,500 rainbow trout there.

The drawdown, by mid-May, had gone below 1% of the reservoir’s capacity and killed thousands of trout, bass and catfish, DFG biologists said.

The DFG says it is averaging 45 calls a week from first-time deer hunters who aren’t aware that passing a state firearms safety examination is required before buying a hunting license and deer tag.

Courses are provided at numerous Southland locations, and prospective hunters can find them by calling a 24-hour DFG number, (213) 590-5670.
