Santa Ana : Officials Dedicate Transportation Center

An Amtrak train rolled into the new $17-million Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center about noon Saturday, carrying city and state officials who disembarked and then formally dedicated the five-story structure.
Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley and California Lt. Gov. Leo McCarthy joined Santa Ana Mayor Daniel Griset at the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The center, at 1000 E. Santa Ana Blvd., is expected to serve more than half a million people a year with trains, various bus lines, taxis, limousines and airport shuttle buses.
Built in a Mediterranean style of architecture on a seven-acre site, the center will also house a number of offices and conference rooms. The U.S. Department of Transportation contributed $2,020,000 to the project and the California Department of Transportation chipped in $4,450,000, with the remainder coming from the city, including $6.2 million in redevelopment bonds.
An open house featuring tours, music, balloons, food and displays, including fire engines and a zoomobile from the Santa Ana Zoo, was held after the dedication until 6 p.m. and will continue today from noon to 6 p.m.
