Lava Within a Mile of Hawaii Residents as Eruption Ceases; No Threat Indicated

VOLCANO, Hawaii — A fast-moving stream of lava came within one mile of a residential area Wednesday morning before an eight-hour outburst by Kilauea Volcano ended.
“It (the flow) will pose no threat to any developed property,” said Reggie Okamura of the U.S. Geological Survey’s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Hawaii County Civil Defense officials said residents of the Royal Gardens subdivision were notified of volcano developments, but no precautions were taken.
Subdivision residents have been evacuated several times because of oncoming lava, which has destroyed 16 residences in the area since Kilauea began erupting in January, 1983.
