Worker Killed When Beam Falls

A 60-foot beam fell from a crane at a construction site in downtown Los Angeles today, crushing one worker to death and injuring another.
Art Ramirez, 25, died in the emergency room of California Hospital, a spokesman said. The other worker, Felipe Tijerina, was reported in stable condition at County-USC Medical Center with a possible back injury. Three Los Angeles Fire Department units and three ambulances were dispatched to the scene at 801 S. Grand St. at 8:30 a.m. What caused the beam to slip was not immediately determined.
