Mayor Dianne Feinstein of San Francisco reacted to the Giants’ latest tentative moving plan by saying, “There’s no way they’re going to Denver.”
City officials in Denver said that Al Rosen, president of the National League team, and two other representatives of the Giants were in Denver on Monday to discuss the possibility of playing there, at least on an interim basis. Corey Busch, executive vice president of the Giants, told Feinstein of the meeting.
Busch said that the Giants were not in a position now to guarantee that they would play in Denver permanently if no new stadium is built in San Francisco, indicating that it would depend on the enthusiasm and turnout of Denver fans during the time--the proposal was for three years--that the Giants might play there.
Giant owner Bob Lurie has vowed that the team will not play another season in 25-year-old Candlestick Park, even though the stadium lease runs through 1994. There has been a proposal for a new downtown stadium in San Francisco.
