Wallace (Chief) Newman, a former football, baseball and basketball coach and athletic director at Whittier College for 22 years, died last Thursday at his home in Whittier after a lengthy illness. He was 84. Newman coached at Whittier from 1929 until his retirement in 1951. One of his football pupils was former President Richard Nixon.
