Surgeon General C. Everett Koop said that, despite industry claims to the contrary, cigarette smoking is addictive, and cigarette advertising should be outlawed. Koop, interviewed on CBS-TV’s “Face the Nation,” also deplored an increase in smoking among young women and put part of the blame on women’s magazines that carry large numbers of cigarette ads. Koop emphasized, “Nicotine in cigarette tobacco is an addictive drug.”
