Police in Madison, Wis., intercepted the University of Minnesota basketball team at Madison’s airport and jailed three players on a count of sexually assaulting a woman at the team’s downtown hotel.
Authorities questioned the entire team but initially jailed only Mitchell Allen Lee, 20, and Kevin Andre Smith, 21, said Steve Tinker, deputy district attorney for Dane County.
A third player, George Williams, was jailed later, Police Officer Joe Durkin said.
The players were booked into the Dane County Jail and held without bond on a count of second-degree sexual assault, a felony carrying a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. No charges were filed, and Tinker said that authorities would decide by Monday whether to sign a complaint.
