Local News in Brief : Simi Teachers to Vote Friday on Contract

Simi Valley teachers are scheduled to vote Friday on the school district’s latest offer of a three-year contract.
The proposal, which came out of negotiations between teachers and district officials last week, offers an 8.5% salary increase retroactive to the 1984-85 school year, with another 8.5% increase for the current year and a cost-of-living increase to be added next year.
The increase includes a 2.08% lottery stipend that the teachers would receive in two payments a year. The first stipend would be distributed in July.
Nearly 800 teachers who attended a meeting of the Simi Educators Assn. at Royal High School Tuesday had mixed reactions to the proposal.
Many teachers condemned the district’s decisions not to give lottery funds to adult-education teachers and to put a cap on payments for health and retirement benefits for regular teachers.
Several teachers said they are prepared to go on strike to settle those issues.
Simi Valley teachers staged a one-day walkout in 1969 over salary issues.
