Harness Horsemen Strike; Meadowlands Closes

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The operators of the Meadowlands race track today closed the track indefinitely after harness horsemen without a contract for four months went on strike.
The closing was announced by Robert Mulcahy, the executive director of the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, after daylong negotiations with horsemen broke off at 1:45 a.m. EST.
“The track will remain closed until we have agreements with a sufficient number of owners, trainers and drivers to resume racing or until we have a bona fide organization that can bind its membership to the term of the agreement,” Mulcahy said.
No new talks were scheduled, he said, adding that the track planned to hold a press conference at noon today to outline what actions it would take.
