Culver City Incumbent Leads in Campaign Funds

Councilman Ron Perkins of Culver City leads in campaign contributions with challenger Andy Weissman a strong second, according to campaign financial reports submitted Feb. 27.

The reports were the first of two statements required by the state before the April 8 election. Seven candidates are vying for two seats on the City Council. The next statements are due March 27.

Perkins has raised more than $13,000, but has spent more than $11,000, the report stated.

He netted $4,600 at a $50-a-plate fund-raiser Feb. 21. He also reported $2,200 from nine individual donations of $100 or more, including $1,000 from the Fox Hills Property Owners Assn.

Weissman, in his first campaign for public office, has raised $10,400 and has spent nearly $4,600.

According to the reports, Weissman received more than $9,000 from 58 individual contributions of $100 or more. His largest contribution of $1,000 came from Albert Vera of Sorrento’s Italian market in Culver City.

Councilman Richard Alexander, a scientist who is running for a fourth term, reported a deficit of nearly $800 despite receipts of $5,165, including a $1,000 personal loan. He received 26 contributions of $100 or more.

Jozelle Smith, a columnist for the Culver City News, reported more than $5,200, including a $1,000 loan from her husband Kenneth Smith. She got 21 individual contributions of $100 or more.

Candidates Fred Ellis, a retired contractor, Richard Neilsen, a deputy attorney general, and Lisa Tracy, a security supervisor, reported receiving no outside contributions. All three listed their $350 filing fee with the city as their only campaign expense.

Pauline C. Dolce, running unopposed for a third term as City Clerk, reported a $500 loan as her sole contribution.
