SDSU Wins at Home, on the Road

Tony Faryniarz had 10 strikeouts in eight innings to lead San Diego State to a 5-3 nonconference win over United States International University Wednesday afternoon at USIU. The Aztecs then played at home Wednesday night and beat Western Oregon State, 8-2.

In the afternoon game, Steve Montejano’s two-run homer capped a three-run first inning for the Aztecs. Steve Hill added a solo home run.

In the evening game, Casey McKeon’s two-run triple capped a four-hit, four-run third inning for the Aztecs (16-8-1). McKeon was 2 for 4 in the second game. John Hemmerly (1-0) pitched the first six innings.

In other college action Wednesday:

USD 12, Chapman College 6--David Rolls’ three-run home run in the fifth inning led the Toreros to the nonconference victory. Right fielder John Slaught was 3 for 4 and scored three runs.

Pitcher John Bonilla (1-1) was credited with the win for the Toreros (17-10-2).

UCSD 4-9, Azuza Pacific 0-0--UCSD easily handled the Cougars in the first game, behind Dan DiMascio’s solo homer in the sixth. UCSD won the second game after the Cougars decided to forfeit, in an effort to preserve their pitching staff for two makeup league games today.
