A foxhole collapsed, suffocating a soldier during routine exercises at the U.S Army Training Center near Barstow, authorities said. Sgt. Michael E. Masterson, 33, an Army weapons specialist, was found in the one-man foxhole in the northwest section of the Ft. Irwin Military Reservation, Sgt. Armando Carrasco said. Masterson, who was stationed at Ft. Hood, Tex., was pronounced dead at a base hospital. The incident will be investigated by personnel from the U.S. Army Safety Center at Ft. Rucker, Ala., the Army said. Masterson, a native of Evansville, Ill., is survived by his wife.
