Surrogate Mother Gives Birth to Test-Tube Baby

CLEVELAND — The first surrogate mother for a test-tube baby has given birth to a 7-pound, 3-ounce girl, and tests have confirmed that the infant is the genetic offspring of the donor parents, a hospital spokeswoman said today.
It was the first time a test-tube baby, conceived in a laboratory using the parents’ sperm and egg, had been carried by someone other than the biological mother, said Dr. Wulf Utian of Mount Sinai Hospital, where the fertilization took place Aug. 1.
The surrogate mother and the baby were in good health after the birth Sunday in a hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., and the baby is with her parents in Detroit.
