Students Honored by School Board

Two teams of students from Gompers Secondary School, which swept the first California State Science Olympiad this month, were honored by the Board of Education Tuesday.
The school board passed a resolution commending the junior and senior division teams, which outdistanced teams from across Southern California in events such as building a toothpick bridge capable of supporting a brick and identifying minerals.
The junior team of 7th- through 9th-graders won 13 medals in 14 events. The senior team of 10th- through 12th-graders won 10 medals in 14 events.
The teams now are trying to raise $16,000 to represent California in the national Science Olympiad May 16 in Lansing, Mich.
Candy sales and private donations have netted the teams $1,500, and several corporations have promised donations. But the district and state cannot provide assistance for the teams, which must pay an $8,500 air fare bill Tuesday, said team manager Brenda Lantow.
Donations or pledges can be mailed to the Gompers Science Olympiad Fund at the school.
