BOLSHOI, KIROV BALLET FILMS WILL BE SCREENED

In anticipation of the Kirov Ballet making its first California appearance in 21 years when it opens a six-day run Wednesday at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, film footage of Maya Plisetskaya, Rudolf Nureyev and Nadezhda Pavlova will be shown Saturday at the Irvine Ballet Center, 17302 Daimler St.

The films, collected by Dwight Grell of Los Angeles, are part of the archives of the Bolshoi and Kirov Ballet Collections. Screenings, beginning at 7:30 p.m., will include:

--The full-length documentary “Maya Plisetskaya,” in which the prima ballerina is interviewed and seen dancing excerpts from “Don Quixote,” “Swan Lake,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “Romeo and Juliet,” among other works.

--Nureyev’s graduation performance at age 19 from the Kirov Ballet School, in which he and Alla Sizova dance an abbreviated version of the “Corsair” pas de deux.

--And Pavlova’s prize-winning performance of the “Nutcracker” pas de deux (with Vyachesla Gordeyev) at the 1973 Moscow Ballet Competition, in which she won both the gold medal and the Grand Prix Award.
