Federal investigators have questioned several people about a $10,000 check that officials say the sponsor of a Los Angeles basketball tournament paid to Memphis State basketball Coach Dana Kirk, a Memphis paper reported.
According to an attorney for the Tennessee Board of Regents, the check was made out to Kirk after the team appeared in the now defunct Winston Tire tournament in 1983 at the Sports Arena.
The Memphis Commercial Appeal said that George Raveling, the former coach at Iowa, and Bob Boyd, the retired coach at Mississippi State, received no money for their teams’ appearance. Raveling now coaches at USC, and Boyd formerly coached there.
Kirk could not be reached for comment.
