Severe thunderstorms socked the nation’s midsection, unleashing floods and large hail, while a third day of rain in the drought-stricken Southeast left farmers optimistic about some late-season crops. Up to 7 inches of rain across parts of Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa prompted flood warnings. Hail the size of golf balls pounded the northeast Kansas town of Sabetha, breaking dozens of windows in homes, businesses and cars and damaging roofs.
