Caterpillar announced layoffs at three plants.

The layoffs, which take effect Monday, affect 1,085 assembly workers at three Illinois plants. Caterpillar said a two-week strike by 2,400 machinists in Joliet has reduced the production and delivery of various component parts, such as hydraulic hoses, for other Caterpillar plants, making the layoffs necessary. Employees in Joliet, all members of the Machinists and Aerospace Workers union, have rejected two contract offers.
