Girl, 10, Shot Dead in Southeast Alley

A 10-year-old girl was shot dead Saturday morning while walking in a Logan Heights alley.
Sonia Cano of the 200 block of 22nd Street was felled by a single gunshot to the chest at 10:57 a.m., as she was walking outside the rear of an apartment building in the 2400 block of K Street, said San Diego Police Sgt. John Wray.
Sonia, a fifth-grader at Sherman Elementary School, was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she died at 12:12 p.m.
Jose Maria Ruiz-Maldonado, 47, of Logan Heights, was arrested on suspicion of murder. Wray said it was not known whether the shots originated from inside the apartment building.
Ruiz-Maldonado is being held at San Diego County Jail downtown.
