Marine North Saw Army-Navy Game as Lehman’s Guest

Associated Press

Marine Lt. Col. Oliver L. North, the former National Security Council aide under fire for his role in the Iran- contra connection, was a guest of Navy Secretary John F. Lehman Jr. at last weekend’s Army-Navy football game in Philadelphia.

North, who refused to answer a House committee’s questions today about the arms deal and the diversion of profits to Nicaraguan rebels, was “among 350 guests that the secretary invited” to the game, Navy spokesman Cmdr. Mark Neuhart said.

Neuhart said North “traveled at his own expense aboard a train reserved for the secretary and his guests,” although he did not ride in Lehman’s personal car on the train.

Asked if Lehman thought the invitation proper in the wake of North’s removal from the White House job, Neuhart said: “We do not have a statement on that. The invitation was extended and accepted.”

North graduated from the Naval Academy in 1968. His alma mater lost on Saturday, 27-7.
