Orange County Girls’ Basketball : O’Brien Paces Mater Dei Victory

Kelly O’Brien, a 5-foot 11-inch sophomore, led the Mater Dei High School girls’ basketball team to a 71-44 victory over John W. North in the quarterfinals of the Savanna Tournament Tuesday night.
O’Brien had 17 points for the Monarchs (7-1). The win advances Mater Dei to the semifinal round against Marina at 6 p.m. today.
In other Savanna Tournament action:
Marina 54, Irvine 32--Dawn Charroin led the Vikings (6-1) with 16 points and 9 rebounds.
Garden Grove Tournament:
Capistrano Valley 43, Costa Mesa 39--Caylin Combs had 16 points for the Cougars (5-1).
Non-league action:
Bolsa Grande 66, Sonora 35--Doreen Day led Bolsa Grande with 22 points and Caroline Matney had 10 points and 15 assists at Bolsa Grande High School.
Fullerton 50, La Mirada 44--Vicki Silva led Fullerton (4-4) with 23 points at La Mirada High School.
Buena Park 49, Rancho Alamitos 27--Debbie Bellony scored 14 points for the Coyotes (3-4) at Buena Park High School.
Santa Ana 44, Laguna Hills 33--Lolly Figueroa scored 13 for the Saints (3-3).
Santa Ana Valley 64, Saddleback 36--Senior guard Sharon Murrell led the Falcons (3-1) with 26 points.
Estancia 32, Trabuco Hills 28--Shawna Newbern led the Eagles with 18 points at Trabuco Hills High School.
In Empire League action:
Kennedy 67, Pacifica 42--Ursula Lovely scored 30 points in this league-opener for Kennedy (2-2).
Esperanza 42, Loara 36--Laura Jones led the Aztecs with 14 points.
