A 20-year-old Northern California man was booked on suspicion of murder in the slaying of a 2 1/2-year-old boy whose body was found in a plastic bag in a culvert. Yuba County sheriff’s deputies arrested Leo D. Self, 20, of Linda after he made a taped statement to investigators, Sheriff Robert Day said. A search party of deputies and volunteers found the body of Richard Daugherty about four hours after Self reported the boy missing. “Self became really agitated with the kid and started beating him about the head, face and body,” Day said. “He put him to bed after the beating, and when he got up, he found the baby was dead.” Self had lived with the boy and his mother for about six months in Linda, a rural town 40 miles north of Sacramento.
