France, responding to an appeal by President Hissen Habre of Chad, parachuted several tons of supplies to beleaguered forces fighting Libyan armored columns in the north of Habre’s divided country. A French Defense Ministry communique said that food, munitions and fuel were dropped from two transport planes to aid inhabitants of the Tibesti region, threatened by both famine and attacking Libyans. However, France has repeatedly told Habre that it will not support any attempt to reconquer the north.
