The United Nations Children’s Fund report “State of the World’s Children 1987” was surely the most inspiring news in a long time, in that 1 1/2 million children’s lives were saved in the past year by methods promoted by UNICEF. It was also the most horrifying news, because we learned that some 7 million more could easily be saved by the same low-cost health and prevention programs in the developing countries if we had the political will to make it happen.
