SUPER BOWL XXI : NOTEBOOK

From Staff and Wire Reports

Broncos quarterback John Elway was critical of his team’s failure to score from the New York one-yard line in the second quarter.

But he came to the defense of kicking specialist Rich Karlis, who failed to make a 24-yard field goal when the drive stalled and later missed a 34-yard kick as well.

“Any time you don’t get the points when you have the opportunity, it hurts,” Elway said. “But Rich was doing the best he could, and we just didn’t want to let those (misses) bother us. We just kept going. We were moving the ball and, at the time, we felt we were going to be all right.”
