USD Rallies in 5th Inning for 7-6 Victory

SAN DIEGO — The University of San Diego scored three runs in the fifth inning and defeated Nevada Reno, 7-6, Saturday in a West Coast Athletic Conference baseball game. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was rained out.
Jim Westlund (3-1) pitched the final 2 innings for his second victory in relief in two days. USD (3-5, 16-9) trailed, 6-4, entering the fifth. Mark Trafton doubled and scored on Robby Rogers’ single. Rogers later scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Escheveste to tie the game. Andy Roberts walked, stole second and scored the winning run on a passed ball.
Dan Newman was 2 for 2, scored twice and had two RBIs, and Roberts scored three times to lead the Toreros. Nevada Reno (2-4-1, 12-12-1) was led by Sam Thomas, who hit a two-run homer in the fourth.
