BASEBALL

For the second game in a row, Cal Lutheran scored 12 runs and lost. After dropping a 14-12 decision to Lewis and Clark College on Tuesday, the Kingsmen lost, 15-12, to Concordia College of Oregon. Freshman pitcher Sean Wheelock entered the game with a 7.20 earned-run average and those numbers only got worse. He faced six batters, walking the first two then giving up four consecutive hits, capped by Jeff Walker’s three-run home run that gave Concordia a 6-0 lead. Cal Lutheran narrowed the lead to 13-9 after eight innings but committed three errors in the ninth that resulted in two unearned Concordia runs. Junior Chris Portis was a bright spot for Cal Lutheran (8-13). He was 3 for 4 with a triple, a two-run homer and 5 RBIs. . . . The Master’s pitching staff was also shelled in a 14-4 nonconference loss to Northwest Nazarene of Idaho. Junior outfielder Steve Reyes went 2 for 4 with 1 RBI for Master’s (11-13). Northwest Nazarene is 5-5.

SOFTBALL

Karen Mead pitched a one-hitter as Moorpark defeated Cuesta, 3-0, in a Western State Conference game. Mead (12-7) struck out seven and walked one. Moorpark (12-8, 5-0 in conference) scored a run in the first when Malia Ouzts bunted Peggy Liebel home on a suicide squeeze play. Moorpark added two more runs, both unearned, in the sixth. Moorpark’s Krissy Erickson was 2 for 3 and scored a run. . . . Freshman Pauline Madrid pitched her third shutout as Pierce defeated Santa Monica, 4-0, in a Western State Conference game. Madrid (8-6), a graduate of Kennedy High, allowed two hits, struck out eight and walked three. It was Madrid’s fourth win in five conference decision. Sabrina Kuhn was 2 for 3 with a double and Dianne Nichols had an RBI single in the first inning for Pierce (8-6, 4-1 in conference). Santa Monica dropped to 6-7 and 3-2 in conference.

VOLLEYBALL

Ron Dugar had 17 kills and six blocks to lead Pierce to a 5-15, 15-6, 5-15, 15-11, 15-6 Western State Conference victory over Santa Barbara. Joe Manzo added 14 kills and Darin Hansen had 10 kills and seven blocks for Pierce (9-3, 6-3 in conference).

GOLF

Rick Starsmere and Frank Crooks each shot 78, but Pierce College finished last in a three-way nonconference match at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego. San Diego Mesa won the match with a score of 386 and Rio Hondo (392) was second. Pierce shot 414. Rob Janke of Mesa took medalist honors with 74.
