Cal State Northridge outfielder Lenn Gilmore continued his flair for the dramatic Wednesday, slugging a two-run home run in the top of the 12th inning to lead the Matadors to a 9-7 California Collegiate Athletic Assn. victory at UC Riverside.
Last week Gilmore delivered a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth to give CSUN a 15-14 victory over Chapman.
Northridge (21-10, 8-3 in conference) trailed, 5-3, heading into the ninth inning of Wednesday’s game, but Mark Anderson put the Matadors ahead, 6-5, with a three-run homer off Riverside’s ace reliever, Richard Pickowitz.
Riverside (19-8, 2-3) tied the game in the ninth, but CSUN came back with three runs in the 12th to take a 9-6 lead.
First baseman Rob Scott started the scoring with a solo home run. After a single by Jim Vatcher, Gilmore unloaded his sixth home run with two outs. Gilmore went 5 for 7 with 4 runs batted in.
Senior right-hander Dan Penner allowed a run in the bottom of the 12th but hung on to complete the game. Penner (7-3) threw 188 pitches, allowed seven hits and struck out 13.
