A soldier from San Pedro was killed in an apparent shooting accident while on guard duty at Ft. Riley, Kan., the Army announced. Officials said Pfc. Marc Jimenez, 18, apparently died of an accidentally self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was on guard duty at an ammunition holding area at the Army base west of Manhattan, Kan. Military authorities were investigating the circumstances of the shooting. Capt. Tony Kowalczik said he did not know where Jimenez was struck or what type of weapon was involved. Jimenez, who was assigned to Company D, 2nd Battalion, 16th Infantry, had been at Ft. Riley since January.
