Barry Hancock and Paul Wekesa of Chapman College defeated Ken Olivier and Steve Enriquez of East Texas State, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, to win the individual doubles title at the NCAA Division II tennis championships at Cal State Northridge Sunday.
Hancock, a freshman from Foothill High, and Wekesa, a junior from Nairobi, Kenya, became the first Chapman team to win an individual doubles title, although they had played together only four times before the national tournament. Wekesa missed the majority of the regular season with an injured shoulder.
By winning the Division II title, Hancock and Wekesa qualified for the Division I individual doubles competition, which begins Tuesday in Athens, Ga.
In Sunday’s singles final, Pat Emmet of Rollins defeated Young Min Kwon of Millersville, 6-3, 6-2.
