World Affairs Council Appearance Canceled

Professors Edy Kaufman and Nafez Nazzal were to have appeared Tuesday at an International Forum of the Los Angeles World Affairs Council but could not agree with council officials on a format.
Their appearance was canceled and, according to Edmonde Haddad, president of the council, a $12 fee was returned to each of about 200 people who had made reservations at the Biltmore Hotel.
Haddad said that Kaufman, an Israeli, and Nazzal, a Palestinian-American, wanted to make individual, 30-minute presentations and that this arrangement would not have left enough time for the guests to ask questions.
He said they were to have appeared with a third panelist, Dr. George Irani, a Lebanese author teaching at USC. In these circumstances, he said, individual presentations are customarily limited to eight minutes.
Kaufman said that he and Nazzal believed that the format proposed by Haddad was “too constraining.”
