A male Oriental fruit fly has been discovered in the Hawaiian Gardens area, prompting stepped-up trapping of the crop-destroying pest, officials said. Los Angeles County Agricultural Commissioner Paul Engler said a pesticide-laced sex attractant will be used in the nine-square-mile area surrounding the find to eradicate the pest. Agricultural workers will also increase inspection of existing traps in an 81-square-mile area surrounding Hawaiian Gardens, Engler said. It is believed that the Oriental fruit fly enters the mainland in uninspected fruit from Hawaii sent either by mail or carried home by vacationers, Engler said.
