Suspected Leader of Bookmaking Ring Arrested

The suspected ringleader of a multimillion-dollar nationwide bookmaking ring raided by Los Angeles authorities last weekend was arrested Friday, sheriff’s deputies said.
Ron Sacco, 46, was taken into custody at a Chino residence, Deputy Van Mosley said. Arrested with him was Carol Fernandez, 46.
Sacco and Fernandez were taken to the Industry sheriff’s station and booked on suspicion of conspiracy to commit bookmaking.
Sacco is believed to be the leader of a bookmaking ring that allegedly used sophisticated electronic gear, including 800-prefix toll-free telephone numbers, to take in more than $40 million in illegal bets during the past year.
Fourteen people have already been arrested in connection with the ring. Deputies last Saturday raided six fictitious business locations used as fronts for the ring, including its headquarters, which was set up as an East Los Angeles lighting company.
