Tankers Cleared for Reflagging

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Coast Guard today cleared the first two Kuwaiti oil tankers to fly U.S. flags and be protected by American naval forces in the Persian Gulf.
Coast Guard spokesman Nick Sandifer said paper work has been completed on two tankers, the 401,000-ton supertanker Bridgeton and the 46,700-ton Gas Prince, and sent to the ships’ owners. The White House said all that remains is for President Reagan to approve a date for beginning convoy operations in the strategic waterway where the Administration has vowed to protect 11 Kuwaiti tankers from attack by Iranian forces.
