Justice Department officials said Atty. Gen. Edwin Meese III may not testify this week before the congressional committees investigating the Iran- contra affair. Meese had been expected to appear immediately after Rear Adm. John M. Poindexter. The Senate and House panels seek to question Meese about his conduct during the days and months leading up to his public disclosure of the affair at a White House news conference Nov. 25. Committee sources said Secretary of State George P. Shultz and possibly former White House Chief of Staff Donald T. Regan may testify this week, with Meese’s testimony the next week.
