A 27-year-old San Clemente man walking alongside the Riverside Freeway was fatally injured early Sunday morning when a driver “apparently fell asleep” and drove his car onto the shoulder, authorities said.
The pedestrian, identified as Garrett Theodore Jones II, was pronounced dead at the scene, a spokesman for the Orange County coroner’s office said.
The driver, identified as George Tilley, 48, of Yorba Linda, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to UCI Medical Center, according to the California Highway Patrol.
CHP officers said the accident occurred at 3:35 a.m. on the westbound Riverside Freeway, east of Brookhurst Street.
“We don’t know why the pedestrian was walking on the freeway shoulder,” said a CHP spokeswoman. A coroner’s office deputy said that investigators found no sign of a disabled car near the accident scene.
CHP officials said no arrest or citation has been issued, but that the investigation is continuing.
