Carter Hawley Hale Stores said it reached a settlement on class-action lawsuits challenging its restructuring. Under the agreement, the suits will be dismissed and holders of Carter Hawley stock from Dec. 8, 1986, through Aug. 20, 1987, will be barred from filing any other litigation. However, the plaintiffs may seek a $1.25-million award to cover legal fees. The retailer also said it has settled a dispute with Woodward & Lothrop over the $183-million purchase price for John Wanamaker that will result in a charge of about $4 million to Carter Hawley’s second-quarter earnings, to be split with the new Neiman-Marcus Group to be formed in the restructuring.
