At a final press conference here Monday morning at which Mayor William Hudnut officially thanked the more than 38,000 volunteers who helped to make the Pan American Games possible, PAX-I officials announced total attendance for the games of 947,469 and ticket sales totaling $9,017,886.
The dollar figure is subject to change if some tickets for canceled or consolidated events are returned.
Another final tally showed that the problem of too many guests for the athletes’ village was caused not by too many athletes but by too many other members of some delegations.
PAX-I president Ted Boehm said: “It was as we had originally thought. They brought more non-athletes than had ever shown up at a Pan Am Games before.” At the peak population, there were 4,453 athletes here.
