US Sprint reported “significant progress” toward resolving billing problems that have plagued 10% to 20% of the company’s 5 million long-distance telephone subscribers. As of Sept. 30, US Sprint bills will be current, showing all calls made during the most recent 30-day billing period, the firm said. Customers have complained about being billed for calls made months before or not receiving bills for months at a time. The problems stem from the difficulty that Sprint’s corporate parents, GTE Corp. and United Telecommunications, have had in merging their billing and accounting systems since establishing their joint venture in the long-distance business last year.
