FLASH DANCING AND SLOW BURNING

It was a scorcher in the San Fernando Valley on Tuesday as the first day of September ushered in a spectacular display of electricity and soaring temperatures. It was the hottest day of 1987 as Woodland Hills reported a 108, and Burbank hit 106. But it was far from setting any records, the National Weather Service reported.
The weather service reported that it was the first day of temperatures over the century mark in Los Angeles in more than a year. The last 100-plus day was Aug. 18, 1986.
