All performances by the Royal Opera in London’s Covent Garden have been canceled until further notice because of a pay dispute with the chorus, Royal Opera officials said. The cancellations were announced after talks between management and representatives of the chorus broke down. Last week, the opera house canceled the opening night of the new season--a performance of Richard Wagner’s “Tannhauser”--because the dispute meant there would be no chorus. The 69 singers want a 9.3% pay increase, but the Royal Opera has offered an additional 4%--a raise that has been accepted by the 120 musicians in the resident orchestra.
